Zombieland 2 and the Evolution of the Undead in Zombie Cinema
New details about the sequel have us wondering if the tried-and-true “double tap” will be enough to hold back this new horde of zombies. According to Deadline:
In Zombieland 2, through comic mayhem that stretches from the White House and through the heartland, the Zombie slayers must face off against many new kinds of zombies that have evolved since the first movie, as well as some new human survivors. But most of all, they have to face the growing pains of their own snarky, makeshift family.
This hints at the fact that the zombies may be evolving, or are an evolved form of the zombies we saw in the original. In my article, I had quite a fun time looking back at the zombie flicks of the past and discussing how they handled the “advanced zombie” idea. Primarily I focused on Land of the Dead and Resident Evil — and yes I gave Resident Evil a hard time, but don’t be fooled. I’m a sucker for any good zombie feature.
I mainly wanted to go into what these franchises have done in terms of “upgrading” their undead and how this worked (or didn’t work), and how the idea could potentially play out in Zombieland 2.
We’ve waited ten years for this sequel (no, really!) so here’s hoping it’s a knockout just like the first one.
