The new series plans on making the phrase “black girl magic” a reality
The creator of Black-ish (a show I’ve never seen, and honestly have never heard any other black people say they watch) has brought a new pitch to ABC — a reboot of the classic 1960s sitcom Bewitched.
The new series will have an inspired new twist, however, and will feature a black Samantha who marries a white mortal husband. Oh, and his name is going to be spelled Darren, not Darrin like in the original show. Maybe “Darrin” was a name back then but it certainly is not now.
ABC’s Bewitched has an intriguing tagline to boot, making it clear it will heavily feature discussions centering around race in America:
In Bewitched, written by Barris and Taylor, Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.
No word on when the pilot will premiere, but this could be a fun twist on the typical ABC sitcom. In any case, it makes me want to watch Bewitched re-runs on Hulu — it may actually be the only classic show I haven’t seen. Read more details about the project in my article here.
