Based on the novel of the same name, Angelina Jolie’s next film The Kept sounds like the perfect recipe for the actress to finally snatch up an Oscar for Best Actress. The Amazon synopsis of the novel, written by James Scott, reads:
In the winter of 1897, a trio of killers descends upon an isolated farm in upstate New York. Midwife Elspeth Howell returns home to the carnage: her husband, and four of her children, murdered. Before she can discover her remaining son Caleb, alive and hiding in the kitchen pantry, another shot rings out over the snow-covered valley. Twelve-year-old Caleb must tend to his mother until she recovers enough for them to take to the frozen wilderness in search of the men responsible.
I’m hoping this movie turns out to be a period-piece version of John Wick and The Revenant, personally. But I also want Angie to make her own mark in this kind of tragedy-strewn revenge film. The Oscar-bait aspects are strong, especially with the story coming from a novel, but I hope it becomes more than that. In any case, this will be her return to the forefront of the camera since Beyond the Sea in 2015, and her time as a director and producer have likely only strengthened her acting skills so we are probably in for a treat with The Kept.
