Returning to modern day scary movies, the 31 days of horror continues with a wonderfully creepy gothic ghost story from the unique mind of Guillermo del Toro
CRIMSON PEAK (16 October 2015 USA)
Dir. Guillermo del Toro | Screenplay by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins
I remember seeing this in theaters and being unsure what to expect, especially from del Toro. Would this be as grisly and gory as his previous films, would it be a traditional sort of ghost story, or would it be something different altogether? Turns out Crimson Peak feels somewhat lackluster in the violence department so familiar to the legendary director, but still offered up an eerie caravan of specters and mystery that made the film more than worth my while. Of course, there is a generous amount of blood to be found here as well. It’s a wonderful gothic tale that garnered a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and even earned high praise from Stephen King himself. Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, and Jessica Chastain all have great performances — with the latter two delivering each spooky surprise moment perfectly.
